EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Six members of the Metropolitan, Philadelphia and Boston Women’s Golf Associations incorporated the Women’s Eastern Golf Association (WEGA) in 1906. The three Associations had been playing Inter-City Team Matches since 1902 and developed an interest in conducting an individual strike play competition. A Championship was formed and the inaugural event was held in 1906 at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, New York.

DORIS BENNETT

Doris Joined WEGA in 2009. A lifelong resident of New Jersey, she moved to South Carolina in 2008. While in New Jersey, Doris was a member of Raritan Valley Country Club from 1991 – 2008 and served in various capacities for the RVCC Women’s Golf Association.

Doris was a member of the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association from 1995 – 2008 and the Garden State Women’s Golf Association from 2003 – 2008. She served as Treasurer of the WMGA from 2003 – 2007, as well as Treasurer of the WMGA Scholarship Foundation from 2003 – 2008.

Doris was also a member of the New Jersey Women’s Golf Association from 2001 – 2009. Doris currently is a member of Rock Hill Country Club and joined the Charlotte Women’s District Golf Association in 2009. Doris has been active as a course rater since 1997 and, representing WEGA, currently serves on the USGA Regional Associations Committee.

ANNE GANNON

Anne was invited to join the WEGA Executive Committee in 2010.  Anne was the 2003 WEGA Amateur Champion.  WEGA is honored to have Anne as a member of the Executive Committee.

After attempting the Futures Tour in 2004, Anne took a break from competitive golf to complete her Masters Degree in Accounting and became a Certified Public Accountant in 2009. Anne returned to competitive golf in Massachusetts, and balanced playing golf and an accounting career in Boston until the birth of her son James in 2012.

SHELLEY SAVAGE

Alexandria, VA
PRESIDENT

Shelley served 26 years on active duty in the Navy Nurse Corps, retiring from the Navy in 2003 at the rank of Captain.  She continues her nursing career as a Staff RN in Outpatient Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.  She served as President of the Virginia State Golf Association – Women’s Division in 2006 – 2007 and Vice President in 2004 – 2005.  Shelley also served as the 1996 and 1997 Captain of the Virginias Team during the annual Virginia / Carolinas Team Matches.  

An accomplished golfer, Shelley won the 2006 WEGA Senior Championship.  Other recent titles include the 2005, 2012 and 2013 Virginia Senior Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship; the 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2011 Virginia Senior Stroke Play Championship; the 1992, 2005 – 2007 and 2009 – 2011 Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association (WDCGA) Championship; and the 2007 – 2008 WDCGA Senior Championship.

Shelley, a native of Trenton, Michigan, holds a Master of Science degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing from the University of Michigan.

JAN SUTHERLAND

VICE PRESIDENT
Danville, VA

Jan joined WEGA in 2001.  Jan is a member of the Virginia State Golf Association and the WGA at Danville Golf Club.  She is a Past President of the VSGA-WD and served on the board for eight years.  She is also Past President of the WGA at Danville Golf Club.

In 2001, Jan became the first woman to be elected to the Board of Directors for the Virginia State Golf Association.  She also served on the Board of the VSGA Golf Foundation.  Among her many golf achievements, Jan has won twenty-three club championships at Danville Golf Club.  Jan resides in Virginia with her husband Jim.  They have three daughters and six grandchildren.

SUSAN PODOLSKY

Alexandria, VA

Susan joined the Executive Committee in 2011.  She is an attorney in Alexandria, Virginia with her own law practice that specializes in commercial litigation.

She is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School.

​Susan is an avid amateur golfer who competes in tournaments around the country and in Canada.

She is a member of Mount Vernon Country Club in Virginia and the Detroit Golf Club in Michigan.
